Located in the ground of St. Jakob's Square in Munich is this incredible public memorial, a collaboration between designer Martin Papcun and Czech architecture firm Atelier SAD.
What's intriguing about this design by Martin Papcun Atelier SAD is that it's actually an empty, upside-down house. The house was created from black and grey sand-blasted concrete and features a hollow space with walls and a roof at its base. During the day, it's cast in shadow; at night, the space is illuminated. Further, the designers installed the upside-down house with its base sticking up just enough to prevent passersby from falling in.
The memorial was designed to commemorate those in the city who were victims of war or violence, as well as those who have left "their own indelible imprint," describes the designers.
