Pen maker Caran d'Ache and horological lab MB & F have collaborated with one another to create the Astrograph pens, a series of three pens inspired by space exploration. The pens are luxurious indeed, with handmade designs and expensive materials that contribute to their $20,000 price tag.
Part of the immensity of the pens' price is in the amount of labor and fine precision that goes into making them. Each pen set consists of 99 new components designed from scratch, and putting these components together requires over 500 manual operations. Further, the pens are rare, with only 99 available in each style.
The three pens in the Astrograph collection are differentiated by material and finish, rather than by design. These are a rhodium pen with a high-gloss finish, another rhodium pen with a matte finish and a third made from ruthenium.
