Arran Sly modeled for photographer Philip Riches for the February 2012 edition of Attitude magazine.
The spread features sleek modern takes on male athletic attire, from neon detailing to shiny textures and spandex footsies. The use of lighting is stunning, accentuating both the sharply attractive features of the model and the contemporary aspects of the clothing. However well done, the composition of some of the photos is controversial.
Two of the photographs out of the series include props. The props happen to be a group of black models supporting the white main. The images are immediately shocking, and suggest imperialistic undertones. The typical white, football-playing male Arran Sly is in a dominating position of a group of males of African descent.
Even more curious is that the shoot was created for Attitude magazine; a UK-based publication on gay lifestyle and fashion. Where the equality card would usually be apparent, the series creates a level superiority and inferiority.
