Underwater Operas

Aquaria Palaoa is a Deep-Sea Singing Sensation

Have you ever wondered what an underwater opera would look and sound like? It would be difficult for the singers to stay dry, but more importantly it seems impossible for any singing to take place. Aquaria Palaoa breaks the bounds and dives right in with an amazing performance.

Aquaria Palaoa is happening in Berlin beginning on May 1 through to September 17, 2010. The concept originally came from Claudio Herr, a former swimmer turned opera singer. For Herr, it was a natural blend of two passions, and the result is simply stunning. Aquaria Palaoa takes place in a large indoor pool where the singers wade in, out and under the water. Special microphones are attached to their scuba-diving gear to ensure audience members can still hear them when beneath the surface. What's even more interesting is the show also uses material recorded 100 meters under an ice shelf in Antarctica. Sounds chilly.
