Digitally Animated Folding Screens

Yusuke Shigeta Combines Tradition and Digital Technology

Simply put, the Folding Screen of Painted Sekigahara Landscapes is an animated folding screen that takes on a traditionally Japanese silhouette. The artist behind this work is Yusuke Shigeta who is taking part in a popular contemporary area of material study which searches for possible synergies between ancient traditions and digital designs.

As the name might suggest to those who are familiar with Japanese history, the animated folding screen boasts a reference to the "17th-century folding screen The Battle of Sekigahara, which depicts one of the most notable wars in Japanese history." This work is held by the Osaka Museum of History and Yusuke Shigeta used digital modeling techniques to recreate this scene in a new light, with over 500 different characters which makes it that much more impressive.
