Taking inspiration from the success of the tile-plastering Space Invaders, a renowned street artist, a loose affiliation of Argentine DIY individuals have congregated under the banner of the Anda Project, a campaign which hopes to beautify the crumbling sidewalks of Rosario.
Since the mid 1970s, when the industrial production of calcareous tiles drew to a halt in Argentina, the country's paved footpaths have fallen into utter disrepair. When one of the geometric tiles break, the days of the adjacent blocks are numbered. With the aim of reclaiming their once-gorgeous side streets, Inne Martino, Fabricio Caiazza and many more artists have begun crafting handmade calcareous tiles with unique and colorful designs, maintaining the sidewalks in lieu of government workers. The result of the Anda Project is stunning pavement, which adds a dash of whimsy to the routines of pedestrians and tourists. The next time you find yourself in Rosario, Argentina's third largest city, keep your eyes on the ground.
