The Aldi Fishmonger Tuna Chunks will be packaged in a cardboard sleeve in its four-pack variety in a bid to eliminate plastic packaging from the product. Starting from mid-September, the packaging will be rolled out to over 270 Aldi locations in the UK and comes as part of the brands recent commitment to reduce or eliminate plastic from its products. The trial packaging will take place for four months and is reported to save 11 tonnes of plastic from being created.
Managing Director of Corporate Responsibility at Aldi UK and Ireland Fritz Walleczek spoke on the Aldi Fishmonger Tuna Chunks cardboard sleeve packaging saying, "We’re constantly reviewing our product range to remove and replace single-use and hard-to-recycle plastic packaging. We’ve introduced a number of initiatives to reduce unnecessary plastic already this year, and we’re particularly excited to be trialling the cardboard tuna sleeve, given it’s a first for the UK supermarket sector. Cutting waste is such an important part of everything we do at Aldi, and these packaging innovations are another example of us doing just this."
