Airplane-Building Robots

These Robots Will Be Able to Autonomously Build Airplanes

Scientists belonging to the VALERI Project (Validation of Advanced, Collaborative Robotics for Industrial Applications) are working on building mobile airplane-building robots that will be able to autonomously construct working airplanes. The scientists have so far put together an early prototype using an omniRob robot.

While robots have long been used to assemble cars, airplane assembly is a different matter as airplanes aren't built in assembly lines, so any robots used in their construction would have to be able to move around them. They will also need to be adaptable, working at different heights and angles while accessing different areas of the airplane under construction.

The airplane-building robots will need to be equipped with special computer vision systems and tactile sensors to prevent them from bumping into humans.
