Arboreal Air Purifiers

Air Drop Combines Self-Sustaining Plants and Tech to Clean

Chicago-based designer Jillian Tackaberry has created the Air Drop, a conceptual air purification system/hanging house plant. Tackaberry designed the Air Drop for the Electrolux Design Lab competition. This unique air purifier is made up of two parts. First, a fan powered by solar or kinetic energy filters out large particles. The next part of Air Drop is Tillandsia, a plant that grows without a need for soil and which can absorb airborne pollutants.

The Tillandsia requires very little maintenance to be kept alive; its leaves need to be soaked in water every so often. Tackaberry's concept is awesome in that it adds a different dimension to the air purifier. The fact that the plant part of Air Drop requires little to no upkeep should help the design appeal to young people who want clean air but can't be trusted to consistently water a plant.
