3D-Printed Pizza

This 3D Printer Pizza Could Be the Future of Food in Space

This 3D printer pizza, printed out by a machine designed by engineer Anjan Contractor, is the first test for what could be the new way to make food for astronauts on long missions in the future. Rather than eating from tubes and vacuum sealed packages, a 3D printer could instead simultaneously print out and cook meals for astronauts.

The printer prints the pizza in ‘blocks’—a block of dough followed by a block of sauce and a block of cheese—to create a square-shaped personal pizza. This 3D-printed pizza has cartridges that are intended to last thirty years. Though still in the early stages of production, this 3D printed pizza could pave the way for massive changes in food production.
