Illac Diaz is a Filipino student and the man behind the 1 Liter of Light project. The 1 Liter of Light project involves taking used plastic bottles and turning them into solar-powered light bulbs. The mission is to provide folks with sketchy electricity access a source of light during the day.
The 1 Liter of Light project doesn't involve any technology whatsoever. Instead, Diaz's lights are made by wedging a bottle filled with bleach and water into a roof. The sunlight hits the bottle and provides light equivalent to that made by a 60 watt incandescent light bulb. The bottled light keeps folks from having to rely on kerosene lamps or from having to cut a giant chunk out of their roof's. Diaz has joined up with the My Shelter Foundation group to try and get a million of the solar liter lamps installed in homes throughout the Philippines.
