The Waterline Monument was created to celebrate the New Dutch Waterline, which was recently awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The award was given in 2021, and the new monument aims to honor its status through its unique design.
To create the monument, architecture and art studio, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh stacked hundreds of steel tubes in the shape of an arched memorial. Located in Laagraven Park, Utrecht, the monument is comprised of weathered steel tubes to create an everlasting design. The structure includes three large arches that overlook a peaceful body of water. From a distance, it is designed to appear as a solid structure. However, when it is approached, the tubes varying lengths and hollow forms are revealed.
