MAD Introduces the Train Station in the Forest in China
Amy Duong — February 10, 2024 — Art & Design
Chinese architecture studio MAD rebuilds a historic train station with the unveiling of the Train Station in the Forest. It is located in central Jiazing and grows the underground terminal and park. Notably, this is the studio's first station and it means redefining the structures of transportation in China. The terminal is made with a public park which is located at ground level. It also features a full-scale replica of the original station from 1907.
Founding partner of MAD, Ma Yansong explains the design concept, stating "They stand like imposing palaces in Chinese city centres surrounded by wide main roads, viaducts, and vast empty squares. We should rethink and redefine the spatial patterns of such transportation infrastructure buildings in China. We can break away from the common pursuit of grandiose monumental buildings and make them urban public spaces with transport functions, natural ecology and cultural life, where citizens are happy to go, stay, meet, and enjoy."
