CULTIVATE is a design house that, as many Dutch designers do, explore the extreme edges of puns. They are very toung and cheek with their designs. Their playfulness does not detratct from the visceral power that their objects produce. The Therese chandelier, in particular is one of these visceral items. The designers have thrown out the paradigm of crystal, and concentrated on the two dimensional silhouette of a chandelier as the basis of the chandelier design. Modern acrylic replaces crystal, however the effect is equally or more clear in its function to dazzle.
Trend Themes
1. 2D Design - Exploring the possibilities of two-dimensional designs as replacements for traditional three-dimensional designs in products such as chandeliers.
2. Acrylic as a Crystal Replacement - Innovating with acrylic as a substitute for crystal to create novel designs with equivalent visual impact.
3. Tongue-in-cheek Designs - Creating playful and witty designs that are still visually arresting and push the boundaries of what is expected in an industry or product category, such as lighting.
Industry Implications
1. Interior Design - Exploring the possibilities of 2D designs or acrylic replacements in lighting fixtures and other home decor products can lead to innovative and unique interiors.
2. Art Design - Incorporating tongue-in-cheek designs in artwork or sculptures can offer a refreshing creative take and potentially attract new and diverse audiences.
3. Event Planning - Using unique designs like the Therese chandelier can create a memorable and visually stunning centerpiece or decor item for special events.
