Sweanty, a Spanish startup, has introduced a novel wearable patch designed for athletes to monitor their hydration levels by analyzing sweat. The patch, which is currently in a single-use format, tracks salt loss during physical activity, enabling athletes to tailor their rehydration strategies with the appropriate amount of electrolytes. The data collected by the patch is transmitted to a companion app, providing a personalized hydration plan based on the athlete’s unique “SWEATPROFILE.” This innovation is particularly significant for professional athletes who require precise hydration to maintain performance, energy levels, and endurance, as well as to prevent cramps and regulate body temperature.
The technology behind Sweanty’s patch was developed during co-CEO and founder Laura Ortega Tañá’s PhD research and involves a patented paper-based salt measurement method. When the patch comes into contact with sweat, it activates a battery with two electrodes on a paper inside, which then performs the analysis. Although the product is not yet available for purchase, it is expected to launch in Spain by the end of May 2024. The company is also working on a version of the patch that retains the electronic components after use, reducing waste. The initial focus is on trail runners, but the technology is applicable to various endurance and performance sports, excluding water-immersed activities like swimming.
