BIG Designs the Waterfront Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art
Amy Duong — August 8, 2024 — Art & Design
Danish design studio BIG has designed the Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art in China. The space is defined by its curved metal roof which is referenced to as its 'fifth facade.' The museum is on Jinji Lake by the city's Ferris Wheel and it is currently under construction processes. So far, it is showcased as a range of tiered buildings that are all connected by swooping roof planes.
Founder of BIG, Bjarke Ingles speaks about the design project, noting "Against the open space of the lake, the gentle catenary curvature of the roofs forms a graceful silhouette on the waterfront. Its nodular logic only becomes distinctly discernible when viewed from the [ferris wheel] gondolas above. The stainless roof tiles form a true fifth facade."
