Microsoft and SRL Diagnostics have created an AI system that can diagnosis cervical cancer at a faster rate. The two organizations originally worked on the project last year. Notably, the new system runs on Microsoft's Azure to screen images for the early stages of cancer.
The system is undergoing a validation process in labs, which will take anywhere from three to six months. During this time the system will analyze over half a million images.
Dr. Arnab Roy is the SRL Diagnostics Technical Lead for New Initiatives & Knowledge Management, Dr. Roy also spoke on how the AI system could affect healthcare in the future, "The API has the potential of increasing the productivity of a cytopathology section by about four times. In a future scenario of automated slide preparation with assistance from AI, cytopathologists can do a job in two hours what would earlier take about eight hours!”
