Qualcomm's 'Snapdragon X' Will Compete with Apple Silicon
Colin Smith — October 11, 2023 — Tech
With its new Snapdragon X series of processors, Qualcomm is aiming to take on Apple in the ARM-based PC market. The 'Snapdragon X' series, which was unveiled on October 10, 2023, features Qualcomm’s own Oryon CPU cores, which are built to provide a huge boost in speed and energy efficiency. The Oryon CPU is the outcome of Qualcomm’s purchase of Nuvia, a company founded by former Apple engineers, in early 2021.
The Snapdragon X series will integrate the Oryon CPU with a GPU and a NPU to enable new kinds of user experiences for the new era of generative AI. Qualcomm says that the Snapdragon X series will outperform the current PC processors from Intel, AMD, and Apple in terms of connectivity, battery life, and AI capabilities. The Snapdragon X series will launch in 2024 with a clear and simple tiering structure to help users choose the platform capabilities from mainstream to premium. Qualcomm will share more details about the Snapdragon X series at its Snapdragon Summit later this month.
