Toronto-based designer Jamie Wolfond creates the Set Table Lamp for Muto. The experimental lighting explores a unique interaction with light. The inspiration stems from 2019 when the designer met a vendor who worked with machining aluminum materials. He then explores how the screw, which is a tool for adjustment can be explored further. The lamp has the threaded design seen on the screw and it has an adjustable element of how the shade height can function by rotation.
Wolfond explains, “I think you need recognizable elements to communicate with people the same way that if you’re speaking a language to someone, you need words that they understand. Good designs are more of a question than an answer. Hopefully this one is too. The way I work is experimental and empirical. It is something I call ‘backward design,’ meaning that we start at the end. We experiment with a process or detail until we find an application that allows us to make something useful or culturally meaningful."

Trend Themes
1. Experimental Lighting Designs - Innovative approaches to lighting design utilizing unique interactions with light sources, such as screw-inspired industrial lamps, are gaining traction in the design industry.
2. Adjustable Elements in Lamps - Designing lamps with threaded designs that allow for adjustable shade heights through rotating mechanisms is a growing trend impacting the lighting market.
3. Backward Design Process in Product Development - The adoption of a backward design process, where applicative elements are derived from experimentation with processes or details, is reshaping the design methodology in product development.
Industry Implications
1. Lighting Design - The lighting design industry is embracing innovative concepts like screw-inspired lamps, paving the way for new creative boundaries and functionality in lighting fixtures.
2. Manufacturing and Machining - Manufacturers specializing in aluminum materials and machining processes have an opportunity to explore the integration of industrial design elements, like screw-inspired features, into their product offerings.
3. Product Development and Design - The product development and design industry can benefit from incorporating experimental and empirical approaches, such as the backward design process, to foster more innovative and culturally meaningful creations.
