Pietro by Matteo Ugolini is a deceptively simple light fixture. First of all, the lampshade resembles the smooth surface of a stone. Secondly, it emits a soft light that provides a serene ambiance in the room it is meant to illuminate. Yet this simplicity is deceptive because it is actually made up of two fixtures that are linked together by the same cord.
Created for Italian lighting manufacturer Karman, Pietro by Matteo Ugolini has a bittersweet existence. As is written on the company's website, "Two stones linked by a thread representing that natural link, the only one and special binding two persons which…despite the distance from each other will remain forever." One of the stones is anchored to the ground in order to keep the other one suspended in the air.
