Mumbai-based design studio AtArchitecture works on the Northeast Pavilion, which is a permanent structure made from bamboo to showcase local crats and building techniques. It is along the Surajkund Lake in Paridabad and the pavilion is made for the Surajkund Craft Fair. This is an event that takes over three weeks annually to honor Indian handcrafts -- during this time, the pavilion was used to showcase work by local craftspeople.
It has a rectangular shape that sections off into eight courtyards to represent the eight states of the northeast region. AtArchitecture explains the material choice and design to Dezeen, stating "The households' looms are usually made of bamboo, and the spaces in which the looms are operated have also influenced the semi-open character of the gallery spaces. Bamboo is a traditional building material in the northeast region and with this project, we wanted to draw attention to, and raise awareness of, this traditional and sustainable material."
