MIT researchers from the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and Aarhus University have developed an innovative device called MouthIO, an interactive mouthpiece designed to capture health data and enable hands-free interactions. Resembling an electronic retainer, MouthIO is a see-through brace that fits the specifications of a user's upper or lower teeth from a scan. The device integrates sensors and actuators, such as temperature detectors, accelerometers, tongue-touch sensors, vibration motors, and LEDs, to monitor health metrics and provide feedback. Users can customize the design using a plugin for the modeling software Blender, allowing for a personalized fit and functionality.
MouthIO opens up new possibilities for health monitoring and assistive technology. It can track behaviors like teeth grinding (bruxism) and potentially monitor bacteria in saliva, providing valuable data for dentists and doctors. Additionally, MouthIO enables hands-free control of devices for individuals with motor impairments, allowing them to interact with phones, computers, or fitness trackers using their mouths. This innovative approach to wearable technology demonstrates the potential for integrating miniature electronics into everyday objects to enhance accessibility and health management.
