Schwartz and Architecture designs the new Leit House, which is a small pavilion-style home that is located in Sonoma Valley. It is a location that embodies a complicated past as volcanoes erupted there millions of years ago, covering the land with lava. Once it cooled, “the eruption’s gases became trapped, forming porous cavities instead of crystallizing into dense stone.”
The Leit house is covered by a solid black mass as the roof, which is inspired by the black volcanic rocks that surround the home. From some angles, it appears light, reflecting a look like it is floating above the pavilion. The home is constructed off of a solid wall, which acts as the service core. The interior broadens out to open living spaces that overlook views of the valley.
