The Laying Bag Changes Color Over Time to Reveal Different Patterns
Katherine Pendrill — April 20, 2016 — Art & Design
During Milan Design Week, Amsterdam-based studio Belén debuted a unique product called the Laying Bag that evolves over time. Not only does the sleeping bag feature a unique texture, but it is also designed to change color over time to create a mesmerizing ombré effect.
The Laying Bag is a 3D-knitted sleeping bag made from vegetable-based dyes. Although the sleeping bag is initially colored pale pink, the dyes will react to UV radiation and gradually change over time. As the colors change, the pattern in the fabric will become more visible, revealing the intricate cylindrical weaves created by the 3D printer.
While many industries shy away from plant dyes because they are unstable, Belén demonstrates how natural dyes can be used to make unique products that consumers will never tire of.
