Sergison Bates Architects Designs the Lavender Hill Courtyard
Amy Duong — August 12, 2023 — Art & Design
Design studio Sergison Bates Architects designs the new Lavender Hill Courtyard Housing in Clapham, London. It is a planted communal courtyard that is meant to evoke a feeling of community and neighborhood feelings. The exterior is defined by grey bricks and has rows of terraced Victorian houses along the urban street.
The location was previously a sheet metal workshop and could be accessed through a passageway that leads up to a mews street. Sergison Bates Architects explains that "Inside and outside, spaces merge in an informal way across various thresholds and levels. [They] give the project a social focus, an invitation to neighbourliness. The arrangement of glazed screens and terraces creates a fluid set of internal and external rooms."
