A Hotel Chandelier is Designed to React to Environmental Data
Alyson Wyers — May 1, 2014 — Art & Design
A mesmerizing kinetic lighting installation turns environmental data into a visual light show. Designed and engineered by IDEO's creative technology studio The Digital Shop, the Edison project at a Palo Alto Hotel allows for new 'generative arts' through custom circuits, light bulbs, software and an in-house 'Internet of Things toolkit.'
Project Edison visualizes data from its local surroundings and responds to different platforms, such as online mentions. Whether the kinetic lighting is mimicking the movement of the people below it, reflecting the weather outdoors or interacting with social media updates, the chandelier engages with hotel guests in a completely new way.
Its developers are working on making the kinetic lighting more interactive by making anyone able to program the installation.
