King Abdullah University of Science and Technology recently revealed the new KAUST Breakwater Beacon as part of its $7 billion research institution.
The magnificent architectural feat was achieved by international design studio Urban Art Projects and Fairweather Proberts Architects. KAUST Breakwater Beacon stands 60 meters high and overlooks the Safaa Harbor and the Red Sea. The beacon is comprised of amorphous hexagonal sections in the form of an elliptical spire reaching out of the Red Sea and into the air.
The KAUST Breakwater Beacon may sound like it's all about the look, but it's also designed as a natural cooling tower for communal events and celebrations. The beacon has a tapered tower design which pulls the hot air from the floor level up through the tower and brings in cooler breezes.
