A Loughborough University graduate, Joseph Bentley, has created a device designed to stop hemorrhages from knife wounds. Bentley claims his device can significantly help reduce blood loss from knife wounds in just under a minute. Named REACT, this device is designed for first responders and has recently won this year's James Dyson Award for the UK.
The device works by inserting a medical-grade silicone balloon tamponade into a wound, which helps reduce bleeding by placing internal pressure on the cut. REACT stands for Rapid Emergency Actuating Tamponde and was designed in response to the increased number of stabbings occurring in the UK. Creating this device is very personal to Bentley since two of his friends have been victims of knife-related incidents.
Bentley will use his prize money to refine REACT further while the product undergoes medical testing.
