John Ellway Renovates a Cottage with New Extensions
Amy Duong — December 25, 2023 — Art & Design
Local studio John Ellway updates a cottage located in Brisbane with new features that are meant to "encourage play and movement." It is defined by its series of smaller gardens and the extension is meant to add more lighthearted functions to the location. It rests on a low-rise estate in Woolloongabba and features five gardens -- all of which have their own character.
This includes the neighborhood garden at the front which is more interactive or the more private 'secure courtyard' at the back of the location. Ellway explains, "When extending a house in this city, the existing timber structure is generally lifted into the air and built-in under – it is cheap and quick but destroys the streetscape of the last 100 years. The project engages with the street and neighborhood rather than turning its back."
