'Sony AI' and 'Polyphone Digital' Created the 'GT Sophy' AI

Sony AI, the artificial intelligence research division of Sony, has created an AI by the name of 'GT Sophy' with the help of Polyphony Digital. This AI was created to play a racing game called 'Gran Turismo' at a high level. In order to do this, Sony AI used its deep learning platform and Polyphony Digital's driving simulator. GT Sophy was put through thousands of racing simulations of the game across thousands of PlayStation consoles to learn the optimal way to play the game.
Now, GT Sophy has demonstrated a high enough level of skill to compete, and beat, esports professionals. The AI is capable of controlling the car in intricate ways across elements such as accelerating, strategic breaking, passing other racers, avoiding crashes, and maintaining high speeds across a race. On top of this, GT Sophy remembers each of the game's racetracks perfectly, and is prepared for any situation. While the current implementation of this AI is limited to Gran Turismo, the potential future use for Sony AI's systems is much more wide-reaching across esports and gaming as a whole, such as competition or tournament creation surrounding AI competitors.
