Google has published seven principles to guide its work in AI development and use. These principles are meant to ensure that its AI products and services are developed and used responsibly, and that they reflect Google’s vision and values for responsible AI innovation and development.
The first three principles are about the social impact of AI. Google aims to create AI that benefits people and society, and that outweighs the foreseeable risks and downsides. Google also strives to avoid creating or reinforcing unfair bias in its AI systems, and to follow strong safety and security practices to avoid unintended results that create risks of harm.
The next two principles are about the human agency and dignity of AI. Google designs AI systems that provide appropriate opportunities for feedback, relevant explanations, and appeal. Google’s AI technologies are subject to human direction and control. Google also incorporates its privacy principles in the development and use of its AI technologies, and gives opportunity for notice and consent, encourages architectures with privacy safeguards, and provides appropriate transparency and control over the use of data.
The last two principles are about the scientific excellence and ethical standards of AI. Google values technological innovation that is rooted in the scientific method and a commitment to open inquiry, intellectual rigor, integrity, and collaboration. Google uses AI tools to unlock new realms of scientific research and knowledge in critical domains like biology, chemistry, medicine, and environmental sciences. Google also will not pursue or deploy AI applications that violate these principles or international law or widely accepted norms of human rights.
