Scientists Injected Fluorescent Genes to Create Glow-in-the-Dark Fish

Taiwan scientists have been able to successfully create genetically engineered glow-in-the-dark fish.
Scientists have used biotechnology to genetically modify these sea creatures, though only restricted to medium-sized fish for the time being, and created a perpetually glow-in-the-dark fish. Though bioluminescence -- a chemical reaction that produces light -- often occurs in sea creatures, this is the first for fish. By injecting the adult fish's reproductive organs with fluorescent genes, the offspring produced are able to glow naturally without further injections or medication. Though aesthetically beautiful, these iridescent fish would have a hard time surviving in the wild since their presence would be made quite obvious.
Costing approximately $320,000 to develop, the National Taiwan Ocean University and collaborated with biotechnology company Jy Lin to create these illuminating species, which were unveiled at the 2012 Taiwan International Aquarium Expo.
