The Germ Eliminating Knife Block is a new kitchen device that helps lessen the possibility of food poisoning and spread of food-borne diseases.
The Germ Eliminating Knife Block uses ultraviolet light to kill the germs in the knives, the same way hospitals clean medical instruments. After 20 seconds of exposure to UV light, pathogens such as salmonella, staphylococcus and listeria are eliminated entirely. In addition to killing the germs, the heat given off by the light also dries up the knives.
The knives can be sterilized as soon as they are inserted into the block. But if you want to be sure that your knives are germ-free all the time, the device can be set to automatically turn itself on every three hours. Any chef’s knife, serrated, paring knif, boning and kitchen shears, or a honing steel will fit into the five-slot knife block, so long as the blade is under 8 3/4 inches long.
