A retro GDR bungalow near Berlin has been transformed into a holiday home by its owners Jan Winkelmann and Julia Carloff-Winkelmann. The color palette hits the spotlight as the home is crafted with a palette that nods to California modernism. It has a mono-pitch roof and sloped facade walls, built from a double-walled brick masonry.
Jan Winkelmann spoke to Dezeen about the project, noting "To understand the original architecture and unlock the building's full potential, we decided to completely gut the bungalow. Starting with the floor plan redesign, we first relocated the cellar access – previously a kitchen hatch – to the exterior. Next, we sealed the old kitchen window and installed a new one for the bathroom."
