Disney Researchers Developed the Production FRAN Neutral Network
Researchers at Disney have recently developed FRAN, which is an artificial intelligence system that is made to immediately make an actor look younger or older within a scene. It takes about five seconds to apply the aging effects within a frame and makes it look realistic. Researchers noted that many other systems "typically suffer from facial identity loss, poor resolution, and unstable results across subsequent video frames."
It claims that FRAN is "the first practical, fully-automatic and production-ready method for re-aging faces in video images." Instead of training the dataset from real people, the researchers created a database of several thousand randomly generated faces and aged the synthetic faces through machine learning aging tools -- these results were then processed into FRAN.

Trend Themes
1. AI-assisted Facial Re-aging - The development of FRAN by Disney opens opportunities for AI-assisted facial re-aging in various applications such as film production, cosmetics and anti-aging treatments.
2. Synthetic Facial Dataset Creation - Creating synthetic facial datasets via machine learning aging tools offers new opportunities for data augmentation in facial recognition technology and biometric security systems.
3. Realistic Facial Aging Effects - The stabilization of facial identity, poor resolution, and realistic aging effects in video frames can disrupt the film production industry and marketing campaigns for anti-aging products.
Industry Implications
1. Film Production - FRAN can help filmmakers avoid using makeup and prosthetics to showcase aging effects, saving time and production costs.
2. Cosmetics - The technology can revolutionize the marketing of cosmetic and anti-aging products, by showcasing the product's actual effects on aging skin rather than using edited images.
3. Facial Recognition Technology - Creating synthetic facial datasets can help improve and advance facial recognition technology in security systems by increasing the accuracy of age detection.
