A team of high-powered engineers and scientists from Imperial College London and the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) have combined their expertise in order to be able to create a firefighting drone that is designed to carry out reconnaissance and scouting of structures impacted by fire so that firefighters can focus on taking down flames.
Dubbed 'FireDrone,' this firefighting drone makes use of a layer of insulating aerogel which helps to protect its electronic components - which include an infrared camera, carbon dioxide sensor and camera - from the high temperatures caused by fires. As a result, this particular quadcopter is capable of handling temperates of up to 392 degrees Fahrenheit in 10-minute bursts.
Having already undergone promising tests in firefighter training facilities, this firefighting drone shows plenty of potential in both helping to protect firefighters as well as speeding up the process of firefighting and fostering better outcomes.
