In an effort to ensure a safe experience, especially as more Canadians turn to social media platforms for entertainment amid the pandemic, TikTok Canada expands Family Pairing. The new update, when enabled, gives parents greater oversight into their teen's account and guiding their teen's experience.
The Family Pairing feature allows parents to decide whether their teen can search for specific content, users, hashtags, or sounds as well as control how long they spend on the app. The feature can also limit content that may not be appropriate for a general audience in the teen's 'For You' feed. In addition, parents can decide who can comment on their teen's video with options like everyone, friends, and no one as well as decide whether their teen's account is price or public. Moreover, the control enables parents to decide who can see the list of videos your teen has liked and restricts who can send messages to their teen, or turn off direct messaging completely.
With user safety in mind, TikTok Canada also has several policies and controls in place for messaging. For example, direct messaging is automatically disabled for those under 16, only approved followers can message each other, and images and videos cannot be sent in messages.
