The fahz is an extraordinary line of personalized vases that incorporate facial profiles into their design. These vases are inspired by the Rubin's vase, which uses the negative space along its sides to depict the facial profiles of two people.
The first fahz was created by Brooklyn-based designer Nicholas Desbiens as a Mother's Day gift for his wife. The vase featured the profiles of Desbiens, his wife and their two children. Now, the couple are looking to make personalized fahzes for paying customers.
The process of creating these fahzes begins with converting side-on photos of faces into 3D computer models that are then used to determine the shape of the vase. As the vase is rotated, the facial profiles are visible on either side and morph into one another as the vase turns.
The fahz project is currently the subject of a Kickstarter campaign. A $30 pledge will get you a 3-inch-tall fahz featuring one or two profiles, with shipping expected to commence in May if and when the Kickstarter campaign meets its fundraising target.
