Volvo Teased its Upcoming 'EM90' Minivan for the Premium EV Market
Colin Smith — October 19, 2023 — Autos
The EM90 is Volvo’s first entry into the electric minivan segment, which will make its global debut in Shanghai, China, on November 12, 2023. The EM90 is based on the ZEEKR 009, a luxury MPV from Volvo’s parent company Geely, and shares the same SEA platform and battery options. The EM90 will feature a single rear electric motor with 272 hp, and a choice of either a 116 kWh or a 140 kWh battery pack, offering up to 510 miles of range. The EM90 will also have a distinctive design with “Thor hammer” headlights, a minimalist front grille, and an illuminated Volvo badge. The interior is described as “a Scandinavian living room on the move” by Volvo.
The EM90 is expected to compete with the Mercedes EQV in the luxury electric minivan market. The pricing and availability of the EM90 have not been officially announced yet, but it is likely that it will be sold primarily in China and other Asian markets, where there is a high demand for minivans. The ZEEKR 009, which the EM90 is closely related to, starts at around $46,000 in China, so the EM90 could be priced similarly or slightly higher. It is unclear if the EM90 will be offered in other regions, such as Europe or North America, where minivans are less popular. Volvo has not confirmed or denied any plans to bring the EM90 to other markets.
