California Will Get a Mobile Earthquake Early Warning System
Daniel Johnson — October 17, 2019 — Tech
The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services, UC Berkeley, The United States Geological Survey and others have announced the launch of an Earthquake Early Warning System for California. The California Earthquake Early Warning System will combine a mobile app with other alerts systems.
The system operates by using ground motion sensors that can detect earthquakes before they occur. The ground motion sensors are spread out across a number of different locations in California and will notify users if an earthquake is imminent.
Previously, large-scale alerts could only be accessed by those located in LA County. However, the new system will inform people on a statewide level. The new system will drastically increase people's ability to stay safe and prepare for earthquakes.
