Multidisciplinary design firm Matter has entered into collaboration with the University of the Arts London to produce a ground-breaking earplug design concept that aims to reduce anxiety and enhance focus in stimulating environments. Initiated through an open call by the Crafts Council, this project explores bio-inspired design principles, focusing on resource efficiency and well-being. As part of the project, Matter and the University introduce the 'Helical Earplug' concept.
Drawing inspiration from natural helical structures, the innovative earplug design utilizes three key properties—material and spatial efficiencies, acoustic resonance, and attenuation. The earplug channels sound into the helix, allowing for an adjustable reduction in amplitude and frequency. The Helical Earplug may have connotations for improving focus in open-plan offices and relaxation during travel.
Sustainability is a core focus, with the design using minimal resources and a mono-material structure for longevity and recoverability.
