'Death Wooed Us' is a photo series that is at once grim and beautiful. Captured by landscape photographer Donna J. Wan, the photo series documents specific suicide locations where individuals chose to end their lives. The images give the viewer a vast vision of what people saw in their last moments. Some of the photos gaze past the horizon, while others try to look deep within the murky depths of the water.
Wan's idea for this morbid photo series came from her own experience suffering from postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter in 2011.
After recovering from depression, Wan realized that many people are inclined to travel to well-known suicide hot spots to end their lives. Wan researched frequent suicide spots near the San Francisco Bay, and captured images of locations where incidents of suicide took place.
The photos do not intend to romanticize suicide, but rather aim to give the viewer a glimpse into the most intensely private and desperate moments of people at the cusp of making a life-or-death choice.
