Joe Doucet Develops a Paint to Help Heat and Cool a Home
Amy Duong — March 22, 2025 — Art & Design
Designer Joe Doucet has developed a special color-changing paint that is also climate-responsive. It changes from white in the summertime to cool the house down and black in the winter to keep heat retained. To inspire the development he looked to the science that field mood rings to develop his thermochromic house paint.
It changes from white to black when the temperature changes to 25 degrees Celsius. Doucet explains more about the design process, "Most of the information I found was about what happens to surface temperatures but not how that transfers to the interior. So I decided that I would postpone my decision for a year and run a test. I tend to have, like, five tests going on at all times."
