With so many brilliant design ideas out there, it almost seems a waste to purchase a piece of furniture that only serves one purpose -- unless it performs exceptionally well. The Coffee Set by Stefano Merlo is a wonderful example of a versatile object that can accommodate the placement of items, as well as support a sitter.
The 100% recyclable cork component can act as a simple stool all on its own. Alternatively, a metal ring can be easily installed on top of it to expand its horizontal surface. With the broader circle attached, the piece becomes a side table, working particularly well as a coffee table. The bark-derived material is left exposed in the middle of the Coffee Set, absorbing the heat of a teapot or a kettle like a built-in trivet.
