Local architecture studio STOMP is the creative mind behind the Billy O'Tea house structure. It is made with nautical themes as the main inspiration. The brick house is located in the port city of Thoothukudi, India and it is named after the popular folk song The Wellerman. The home is meant to replicate the look of a docked ship where the residents can take shelter from the heavy rains in the area.
STOMP explains the design process, stating "Thoothukudi is the sea gateway to Tamil Nadu and is known for its pearl fisheries and shipbuilding industries. Water is a mainstay. Why not, then, use it to buoy the architecture – if not literally, at least figuratively? So was born the idea of a house as a docked ship, each component, material and space inspired by a nautical counterpart."
