2m26 Designs a Compact Restaurant with Locally Sourced Timber
Kalin Ned — June 8, 2023 — Art & Design
The Kyoto-based design studio 2m26 debuts an all-in-one ramen restaurant that revolutionizes the mobile restaurant category. The team behind the structure draws inspiration from traditional food carts, specifically the Yatai food carts from the Edo period in Japan. As for the material, 2m26 employed locally sourced Hinoki cypress timber which adds an aura of simple sophistication.
The moveable all-in-one ramen restaurant is designed "to accommodate both chef and cooking equipment, as well as up to four diners." The design even includes a pitched roof, offering some shelter to diners and the chef. 2m26 created this structure to deliver "a unique dining experience [in rural areas]" but given the popularity of street food in bigger cities, the all-in-one ramen restaurant might have a bigger scope than that.
