A team of scientists and researchers over at the National University of Singapore and the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research have developed an innovative new smart bandage that is designed to be able to take advantage of AI in order to better monitor the recovery of wounds so that appropriate and timely intervention can be taken.
Conventionally, wound healing is visually studied by doctors, and often diagnosed using physical swabs. Unfortunately, this means that healing can only be monitored by regularly removing bandages, an action which increases risk of infection and can increase pain and suffering for patients.
This is where the new smart bandage comes in. Using flexible electronics, data processing and nano-sensor technologies, the PETAL (Paper-like Battery-free In situ AI-Enabled Multiplexed) patch monitors wound healing, with AI algorithms used to figure out the status of the healing process. This then allows for timely interventions without undue hassle for patients.
