The New Aesop Shop is Inspired by Japan's Mountainous Landscape
Katherine Pendrill — March 31, 2016 — Art & Design
Architecture studio Case-Real recently designed a striking interior for an Aesop shop in Sapporo, Japan. Instead of opting for a bold and bright interior, the designers decided to draw inspiration from the country's mountainous landscape and distinct volcanic plateaus.
The new Aesop shop is located inside the JR Tower shopping center in the mountainous region of Sapporo. Unlike other beauty shops, the Aesop interior is characterized by cool gray tones that mimic the surrounding landscape. To give the shop a mountainous look, the walls and main counter were covered with a special type of volcanic stone known as Sapporo freestone. The stone was then contrasted with stainless steel shelves and fixtures that give the store a rough, yet contemporary look. As the architects explain, "These are scenes that withhold contradictory elements, which are at the same time dynamic but somehow fragile."
