AINIA is a Spanish research center that develops innovative solutions for the food industry, including new packaging technologies. One of their projects is the active packaging design, which consists of incorporating substances into the packaging materials that can interact with the food or the environment to extend shelf life, improve quality, or provide information.
Active packaging can have different functions, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, oxygen scavenging, moisture absorbing, or ethylene absorbing. For example, AINIA has developed a moisture-absorbing packaging for fresh pasta that can reduce water activity and prevent microbial growth. This packaging contains a layer of calcium chloride that absorbs the excess moisture from the pasta and maintains its texture and appearance.
Some of the benefits of AINA's packaging include Reducing food waste and losses by prolonging the shelf life of perishable products and preventing spoilage or enhancing food safety and quality by inhibiting the growth of pathogens and preserving the nutritional and sensory properties of food. Additionally, the ability to alter the material composition of the active packaging based on the specific needs of clients enables AINIA to create more sustainable packaging solutions than competitors.
