A team at BMW Group has just unveiled a prototype for a pair of augmented-reality driving goggles called 'MINI Augmented Vision,' which allows drivers to see the solid parts of their car as transparent. Debuted at the Auto Shanghai 2015 motor show, the digital glasses are designed to demonstrate how new technology can help to make driving safer and more convenient in the future.
Jörg Preißinger of the BMW Group Research and Technology explains that the glasses work by filtering video filmed by cameras attached to the outside of the car. This video feed is transferred to the glasses to essentially make the body of the car appear transparent to the driver. While the augmented-reality driving goggles are still just a prototype, the technology may be used in the near future to make driving a safer experience by eliminating blind spots and helping with tasks such as parking.
